Just in time for the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games (27 July to 12 August 2012), Nike recently unveiled their latest innovation – basketball jerseys made from recycled plastic bottles. The super light and breathable uniform will be worn for the first time during the games by Team USA.

Using an engineered fabric called Nike Aerographics, each basketball uniform (Nike Hyper Elite Basketball Uniform) uses about 22 recycled plastic bottles. The fabric of the men’s jerseys is made from 96% recycled polyester while the shorts, weighing an impressive 14 ounces lighter than the average shorts currently worn by professional players, is made from 100% recycled polyester material.

The uniforms are designed to contribute to optimum performance by pulling sweat away from the skin, reducing cling, and increasing air circulation.

PET (Polyethylene Terephalate Ethylene) plastic found in almost all food and beverage containers is one of the most common plastics used today. Recycling rate remains low at about 20% for PET (plastic recycling symbol number 1).

In addition to the American team, national basketball teams from China, Brazil, and other qualifying countries will also be wearing Nike’s creation in London.

Nike will also be providing its Pro TurboSpeed uniforms to track-and-field athletes from the USA, Germany, China, and Russia starting this April. According to Nike, the Pro TurboSpeed, “the lightest, fastest track uniform Nike has ever built,” is made with about 82 % recycled polyster using approxiamtely 13 recycled plastic bottles per uniform.

The new Flyknit sneakers were also unveiled which weigh in impressively at around 5.6 ounces, watch video below. Read the Nike press release here.
