Nowadays smartphones are ‘heap’ even at $100 or less. However, they typically come with a two-year contract and in the end; you would be shilling out hundreds of dollars. Then if, you look for no-contract ‘unlocked’ option it may be as high as $500, but you can become flexible in your options.

You do not have to worry about the contract, and you can use any SIM. When you are travelling, you can use a cheap local SIM. If you are buying a contract phone, you will have to stick to the carrier for about two years and things change quickly in that time.

Blackberry Curve 8530

Virgin Mobile has a $35-a-month 2.5GB 3G plan while Boost Mobile has an unlimited $60 monthly plan.

Pros: The iconic Curve 8530 has long been one of the most sought after phones in the business community for its ruggedness, connectivity, and security options. Previously they were only available along with two-year contracts from AT&T, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and Sprint. Now Virgin Mobile will give you the Curve 8530 at just $99.99 with no contract. It runs on smallish process and only has a 2MP camera and a 2.46-inch TFT touchscreen on top of the QWERTY keyboard.

Cons: You still have to look for a carrier plan that enables RIM’s Blackberry Internet Services for using its messaging and email options that define Blackberry.

HTC Wildfire S

From: US Cellular

US Cellular has data plans starting at $40 a month.

Pros: With a 3.2 inch small capacitive touchscreen, 5MP camera with autofocus and LED flash and running on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread this is the best prepaid Android smartphone that you will get without signing a contract. US Cellular- often bringing out such smart bargains sells the Wildfire S at $99.99.

Cons: It runs on a 600MHz processor and performance can be spotted. However, it is not the top-notch android smartphone but it still works fantastic and is one of the best Android handset below $100.

ZTE Score

From: Cricket Wireless

Cricket’s smartphone plans start at $55 per month.

Pros: This is a basic 3G Android phone with a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen display, 3.2MP camera, and access to the Google Play app store. The main thing is that it is available for just $89.99.

Cons: Nothing phenomenal with a poor performance processor and small screen but may still run most apps.

Samsung Replenish

From: Boost Mobile

With no contract and an established network, you will get $55 a month ‘shrinkage’ plan, which means you will pay less if the prepaid payments are timely.

Pros: Samsungs Replenish sells for $99.99. It runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has a touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard.

Cons: As expected, this too is an extremely basic Android smartphone.

Pantech Crossover GoPhone

From: AT&T

AT&T has plans starting at $40 per month.

Pros: With a small 3.1-inch touchscreen and a QWERTY slate slider keyboard, the 3G phone comes at $80 without a contract. It has a 3MP camera without flash and has exceptional battery backup that could last up to 10 days.

Cons: The processor is slow and the Android version is Froyo 2.2, but it has made its position in the list of best cell phones under $100.
