Bottle Bank Arcade Brings Loads of Fun To Glass Recycling

November 19th, 2009 · No Comments

Bottle bank arcade glass recycling is a innovation in which a glass bottle collection bin was refitted to resemble an arcade machine in Sweden

The Bottle Bank Arcade in Stockholm, Sweden

We’ve always believed that our children will learn how to recycle and care for the environment quite quickly if fun is injected into the teaching-learning process by parents. Obviously, we adults tend to also absorb ideas faster or change our habits for the better if there’s fun in doing it.

The idea of fun being a catalyst for change was proven recently by The Fun Theory competition, an initiative of German automaker Volkswagen. One of the featured innovations on the site is the “Bottle Bank Arcade” in which a glass bottle collection bin was refitted to resemble an arcade machine in Sweden – complete with console, sound effects, and flashing points counter.

The result? People were so amused and inspired by the idea that in one single evening, over one hundred people used the arcade machine/recycler compared to just two people using an ordinary bottle bank nearby. I imagine people searching all over their houses for empty glass bottles to deposit and recycle, just to be able to play the contraption.

The Fun Theory runs on the idea that people can be influenced to change their behavior for the better if there’s fun in doing it:

“…the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people’s behaviour for the better. Be it for yourself, for the environment, or for something entirely different, the only thing that matters is that it’s change for the better.”

If you have a similarly brilliant, innovative, transformative, and above all, FUN idea like the “Bottle Bank Arcade,” why don’t you make a video about it and join the competition at The Fun Theory. I’m sure you’ll have fun doing it, and more fun if you win the 2500 Euros ($3,716) cash prize for the winning entry. The contest is open to everyone with a great idea and a camera to document it, so start courting your creative muse now.

Good luck, have fun, and as always, your comments are welcome. You may also link to your fun idea site or video from this page.
