Aluminum beverage cans for recycling
Californians are the leading recyclers of beverage containers in this country. In the first half of 2009, the state recycled a total 8.2 billion beverage containers at an amazing recycling rate of 85%, according to the Department of Conservation’s Biannual Report of Beverage Container Sales, Returns, Redemption & Recycling Rates.
There was a significant reduction in consumption during this time period (January – June 2009) but the recycling rate has sharply increased to 85% from the 72% rate in the second half (July-December) of 2008. Aluminum container recycling rate is at a record high of 91% for this period as Californians also increased recycling for most of the other containers – glass 85%, PET 78%,HDPE 116%.
For the one year period from July 2008 to June 2009, they recycled a record 16.82 billion beverage containers or a recycling rate of 78%. This is a significant increase over the recycling rate from the previous one year period (July 2007 to June 2008) when the state recycled 70% of all containers or 15.33 billion pieces of recyclable materials.
The report also mentioned that the Department is looking into the “degree to which fraud is being committed against the state’s Recycling Program.” A significant increase in HDPE recycling (116%) in the first 6 months of 2009 compared to a 92% rate in the second half of 2008, was also cited to be under scrutiny by the Department to verify correctness in the reporting process. As a result of these investigations, the numbers may change when they release the next biannual report May of next year.

This is great news – 85% recycling rate is pretty high compared to other states/areas. It’s very encouraging to see such success rates in recycling because sometimes it seems like people don’t really even care (in some areas anyway). Hopefully the national recycling rate will keep increasing. -Mike

Those are great reports!
When I lived in California, I could feel the consciousness of the people for recycling. Later, when I moved to a different country, I suddenly noticed the differences, and it was very upsetting… I hope that everyone in the world would take an example from the Californian on how to better treat our planet.

Those figures are very impressive. In my country we are unfortunately far away form that success, since the public here in not ecologically aware . The media has just began promoting recycling

Well done California. 85% is pretty impressive. I wonder what the rates are for other countries like England or New Zealand?
