The Houston Rockets, the Toyota Center, and Republic Services have signed a five-year agreement designating the Phoenix-based solid waste management company as the official waste and recycling partner for the NBA franchise and their home stadium.

The deal, as reported in Waste and Recycling News, covers co-branding on recycling and trash bins within the venue and “in-arena branding” at all events at the facility, including Rocket games. Republic Services will also provide “waste and recycling services and consultation to the arena.”

“Toyota Center has been recognized as one of the country┬┤s leading innovators of green practices among sporting and entertainment venues and this partnership with Republic Services will allow us the opportunity to grow those efforts to an even higher standard,” said Houston Rockets CEO Tad Brown said.

The Toyota Center and Houston Rockets are recognized leaders in the NBA on environmental-friendly practices. Among the green initiatives they’ve implemented within the venue is the 100 percent recycling of paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminum waste in all events hosted in the arena and in their own office spaces. Concessionaires within the stadium are also mandated to serve food in biodegradable packaging. They’ve pioneered energy conservation and efficiency through the use of motion light sensors in their offices and CFC lighting within the venue. An electronics recycling drive (for TV sets, computers, and peripherals) is also held by the Toyota Center and the Houston Rockets annually, to help out in the Houston area’s e-waste management efforts.

Republic Services is a leading provider of solid waste management services in the United States, serving millions of customers in 40 states and in Puerto Rico. Employing 34,000 people, it operates 400 hauling companies and 213 landfills in its service area. Republic Services also owns or operates 242 waste transfer stations and 79 recycling facilities.
