Miley Cyrus Shows Teens How To Be Green

February 24th, 2011 · No Comments

Miley Cyrus shows teens how to be green. Miley Cyrus is one of the environmentally-aware celebrities out there.

Watch video: Miley Cyrus’ “Wake Up America”

I’m not a fan of Miley Cyrus – not because I dislike her or her songs but simply because I thought I was too old to enjoy America’s most popular teen star’s music. That’s why it wasn’t me but my 15-year old daughter who pointed out that Miley Cyrus is in fact one of the environmentally-aware celebrities out there.

We we’re discussing teen-age stuff – YouTube, Facebook, etc. – with me trying my hardest to understand and connect with her. I was telling her it’s not all about enjoying music or movies by her favorite stars but finding some good role models – people who aren’t just celebrities but are doing their best to contribute and improve the lives of others.

I wanted to steer the direction of the conversation to stars like Bono, George Clooney, and Leonardo DiCaprio who are leaving their marks in their respective advocacies. She understood what I was saying but when I mentioned those names, her eyes went blank for a second. Total disconnect. I was silently trying to think of younger celebrities, but I simply didn’t know of any.

Then she said, “how about Miley Cyrus? You know, Hannah Montana?”

I said, “what about her?”

“Well, she’s green, Dad. Try listening to ‘Wake Up America.’”

Wow, a “teachable moment” for me if ever there was one.

I was the one being schooled by my my teen-aged daughter. I thought I had something to teach her, but apparently she was ahead of me in the green teen-age stars department and was already taking note of celebrities who are also into conservation and other social issues.

So, I listened to “Wake Up America” and indeed it’s a powerful reminder to all of us that there are issues bigger than ourselves and that the planet needs our help.

Oh, the earth is callin’ out
I wanna learn what it’s all about but
Everything I read is global warming, going green
I don’t know what all this means but
It seems to be saying

That we’re all in the same boat together.

Wake up America
We’re all in this together
It’s our home
So let’s take care of it
You know that you want to
You know that you got to
Wake up America

And that every contribution or lack of it has an impact.

Tomorrow becomes a new day
And everything you do matters
Yeah, everything you do
Matters in some way

I read up a bit on Miley Cyrus before writing this article and what I found out was quite inspiring. She not only cares about the environment, she’s also a great contributor to worthy causes. She donates $1 from every ticket sold in her concerts to the City of Hope, a nonprofit that’s working with scientists, researchers, and physicians to discover cures for life threatening diseases like cancer and diabetes.

Growing up in our fast-paced time must be a real challenge to every teen-ager out there. It doesn’t mean that us parents know better all the time, however. Our kids do have a lot to contribute and teach us. I’m only too glad I took the time to listen.
