I have two small boys so I’m quite familiar with toy manufacturers in the U.S. Well, Toys “R” Us has just given me one more reason to buy from them. The distribution facility of this giant toy store chain in Wayne, New Jersey is scheduled to be retrofitted with what could be the largest solar rooftop installation in the United States to date.

The retail chain has just signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Constellation Energy Group which includes the installation of 37,000 solar panels on the facility’ roof producing 5.38 MW of power. This project is bigger than the SunPower Corp. (SPWRA)’s 4.8-megawatt array that’s being developed on top of Glimcher Realty Trust (GRT)’s Jersey Gardens mall.

When completed, the Toys “R” Us solar power system is expected to meet 72 percent of the facility’s electricity requirements and will reduce the locations carbon footprint by 4,569 tons.

New Jersey just made it to the list of the top 10 solar power states in the U.S. Creative and sensible private sector initiatives like these are what’s the driving the phenomenal growth of solar power here. Go, New Jersey!
