World Habitat Day

Monday, October 5, 2009, is World Habitat Day 2009. The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October to be World Habitat Day and in view of the recent natural calamities that devastated some countries in South East Asia and the Pacific, leaving thousands of people homeless, this is our chance to really make a difference.

Habitat for Humanity, the lead organizer of this global observance, has been working tirelessly for the past several years to help needy or displaced people worldwide get access to decent and affordable housing. Here’s the statement from Habitat for Humanity as to the purpose of this celebration:

On this day, we reaffirm that adequate shelter is a basic human right, and we focus on the housing conditions of cities and towns around the world. We also use this day to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.

On October 5, 2009, please join us in support of World Habitat Day, as we raise our voices and declare that the lack of decent, affordable housing is unacceptable.

In the last 5 days we’ve all been witnesses, thanks to cable TV, to the horrific destruction of life and property in some countries in Asia and the Pacific. Typhoon Ketsana killed hundreds of people in the Philippines and Vietnam and left thousands of families without shelter or food in the crowded evacuation centers in Manila. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake destroyed homes in Indonesia followed by a tsunami which devastated residents in the American Samoa.

We’re going through a terrible recession right now, and it’s no easy burden for many of us, to say the least. But right at this hour of our need, we still do have the power to reach out and help – even in a small way. I was strongly reminded of this blessing, while watching the terrible series of events and the life-or-death situations unfolding and reading the announcement at the Habitat for Humanity site.

Please visit their site, and help out in any way you can: Advocate, Educate, or Donate at the Habitat for Humanity.

Let’s celebrate World Habitat Day 2009 this Monday in a meaningful and effective way. Thanks.

Thanks so much for a call to action to all of us who in reality have so much. Keep up the good work!
